Miami, Wednesday, September 03, 2008 - The first graduating class of the trailblazing Professional Training Pipeline program, a partnership between Florida Power & Light (FPL) and Miami Dade College (MDC), includes 12 students and they will all receive job offers from FPL with salaries averaging $50,000. In fact, they will receive their job offer letters, hard hats and uniforms at a small graduation ceremony Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at 6 p.m. at Capri Restaurant in Homestead.
The program was launched in 2006 as an innovative educational collaboration to address the workforce needs of the utility industry, as well as the employment needs of the community by preparing students for careers in the energy sector. After just two years, the first graduates earned Associate in Science degrees from MDC and received job offers from FPL at the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant.
FPL experts assisted in training students in simulators and in a variety of courses that ranged from Power Plant Fundamentals to Industrial Safety. They also helped the College identify and recruit qualified candidates for the Nuclear Plant Program, an effort which continues. The MDC/FPL agreement will remain in place through 2016.
