Future Bankers Wrap Up Training with a Reception on Sept. 11
Unique program helps high school students get an early start on a banking career
Miami, Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - This summer, a select group of high school students participated in the Future Bankers’ Camp, an intensive, hands-on program offered by the South Florida Center for Financial Training and Miami Dade College (MDC) to train future bankers. To commemorate the completion of the program, the college will host a closing reception on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at MDC’s Wolfson Campus.
The Future Bankers’ Camp is a joint effort of the MDC School of Business, the South Florida Center for Financial Training housed at MDC and Ocean Bank. Now in its second year, the program helps high school students in their junior year learn the necessary skills to kick start careers in banking.
“We provide them with very specialized training by industry professionals, which in turn gives them tools to explore and see first-hand the world of banking/financial services. Also, each student interns on a rotational basis through the different departments in the bank,” said Connie Laguna, executive director of the South Florida Center for Financial Training.
This year, participants were selected from Booker T. Washington Senior High and Miami Edison Senior High. They completed Teller Operations Certification Training sessions at MDC and Ocean Bank, as well as four-week paid internships at Ocean Bank headquarters.
“They definitely have a competitive edge over anyone else,” Laguna added.
