Hispanic Heritage Month Commemorative Stamp Unveiled at MDC North Campus

Miami, Thursday, October 02, 2008 - More than 1,000 students joined the United States Postal Services’ (USPS) Ernesto Cintado, CBS morning weather anchor Lissette Gonzalez and North Campus President José A. Vicente for the unveiling of the Hispanic Heritage Month commemorative stamp. The event, along with others celebrating Hispanic Heritage, took place Oct. 1 at the North Campus Lakeside Patio.
“The Latin Jazz stamp puts words into picture embodying the essence of Latin Jazz,” Dr. Vicente said. “This is always a great event and it is wonderful to be able to kick-off our Hispanic Heritage Month activities with the unveiling. We are delighted that so many have come out to join us and celebrate in only a taste of the richness of Hispanic heritage.”
Ernesto Cintado, the USPS manager of Customer Service Operations spoke on behalf of Ed Coppola, officer in charge. Gonzalez also addressed the crowd and spoke of the importance of higher education. Hispanic Program Specialist Jacinto Acebal was joined by Dr. Vicente, Cintado and Gonzalez on stage for the unveiling of the new Latin Jazz stamp.
The event, part of Student Appreciation Day/Meet the President, also included a live performance by the Latin rock/pop band Origen. There were also live performances by the Hialeah Senior High Salsa Club and the Barbara Goleman Senior High School marching band. Participants enjoyed authentic arroz con pollo cooked in a large paella pan by the North Campus Lake.
The rich musical heritage of Latin jazz is celebrated on a stamp featuring a bold, graphic design by San Francisco-based artist — and Latin jazz fan — Michael Bartalos. The design conveys the multicultural aspects of the music, percussive and improvisational.
