Miami, October 17, 2008 - In light of the overwhelming success of the 40th anniversary celebration of Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall Campus in the fall of 2007, which featured a week of events for the entire community, the campus will host Fall Fest 2008 from Nov. 18 – 22. Like last year, the campus is coordinating more than half a dozen quality cultural and entertainment events for the entire community free of charge in an effort to expose the community it serves to everything the storied campus offers.
Below is this year’s schedule of events. It is important to note that the Latin Jazz Festival is free, but requires a ticket. The Kendall Campus is located at 11011 SW 104 Street.

SCULPTURE DEDICATION
Double Caesar by Sebastian Trovato
10 a.m.
Location adjacent to the south entrance of the Kendall Campus.
Sebastian Trovato grew up in New York City where he graduated in 1941 from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He worked in graphic design and illustration but continued to paint. His paintings were seen throughout the 1940’s and 1950’s in group exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, in New York at the Barbizon Plaza, Wildenstein Gallery and the Morris Gallery, as well as in Europe and the Far East. He moved to Miami in the latter part of the 1950’s while he continued exploring abstract painting. It is not until the late 1960’s that Trovato began to investigate three-dimensional constructions. This exploration catapults his career as a sculptor.
Trovato’s success comes with his steel colossus placed inside the boom of shopping malls throughout the country. The majority of these sculptures sat on top of rectangular or square pools of water creating environments and focal points in the malls for the busy shoppers. The piece donated by Dr. Nathan Hirsch to Miami Dade College is titled “Double Caesar.” The piece is a geometric play of two monumental polished stainless steel letter C’s that was originally done for the Douglas Centre building in Coral Gables.

Elaine Spatz-Rabinowitz - Artist Statement
The mordant quality of Elaine Spatz-Rabinowitz's trompe I'oeil paintings derives from the desolate nature of the images she chooses and her literal use of the gritty material she represents. Constructed on the border between two and three dimensions, the works take as their principal visual metaphor a battered, scarred and sometimes breached wall, with emblems of privilege visible on the far side.
In pursuit of veracity, the artist, who teaches at Wellesley, pores over an archive of photos including many she has taken herself over the years. She casts Hydrocal and paints it, scorches it, gouges it and laces it with graffiti. She adds found objects and, using oils, renders palm trees and a glimpse of tile-roofed villas beyond. The works vary greatly in size: several are not much larger than a postcard while one creates a tableau that comes close to human scale.
JUBA Gospel Concert
7:30 p.m.
Room 6120
The Miami Dade College - Kendall Campus JUBA Gospel Ensemble is a group comprised of students from varied backgrounds. Founded in 1980, it is the first gospel ensemble at a college to receive academic credit in Florida.
In New York City, during the years 1993 and 1994, JUBA participated in the National Black Music Caucus of the New York Collegiate Gospel Competition, placing first in choir, original attire and choreography.
JUBA was the only community college ensemble present competing against such notable four-year colleges and universities as Cornell, Princeton and Berklee. This is an activity in which they participate every year. Most recently, JUBA recorded their first live CD entitled "Red Velvet Cake" which includes Gladys Knight's recipe.
This project includes songs written by Professor Wayne Bumpers, Rev. Melvin Dawson, Dello Thedford and two former Miami Dade music students, Rev. Glenn Lee and Gordon Smith.
JUBA comes from the word jubilee and means "the rhythm in you."
