Miami, November 17, 2008 - Like many gifted musicians, saxophonist/composer Gary Campbell “cut his teeth” at an early age, in all things jazz thanks to a dedicated mentor and the influential jazz scene of his hometown of Indianapolis. A highly sought-after jazz instructor with numerous performances, accolades and recordings under his belt, Campbell will perform live during Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Jazz at Wolfson Presents, on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.

From the late 1960’s and much of the ‘70’s, Campbell honed his skills by sitting in at local clubs and jam sessions throughout Indianapolis and New York City, a notorious training ground for young jazz musicians. It was in the Big Apple, that he first performed live and eventually gained notoriety by working alongside dozens of industry veterans during studio recordings and sharing the stage with the likes of Arturo Sandoval, Hank Crawford, James Moody, and many others.

One of the most sought-after jazz educators throughout the world, Campbell relocated to South Florida more than 20 years ago and has since taught at several area universities. His latest projects include the CD Intersection, a provocative blend of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and modern jazz; and Thick and Thin, featuring guitarist John Abercrombie.

Each year, organizers of the Jazz at Wolfson series, now in its 11th season, invite renowned musicians to MDC to educate its jazz students, as well as to offer a cultural experience for the rest of the college community and the people of downtown Miami.
