Fifth Annual Dr. Armando J. Bucelo Sr. High School Chess Tournament at MDC Draws Top Talent
MDC's School for Advanced Studies High School Team Wins First Place

Miami, March 24, 2009 - The Fifth Annual Dr. Armando J. Bucelo Sr. High School ChessTournament at Miami Dade College (MDC) once again drew some of the region’s top chess players on March 21, 2009 with MDC’s School for Advanced Studies at the Wolfson Campus winning the contest.
Held in the Chapman Conference Center at the Wolfson Campus, 70 players from 14 high schools participated. In attendance were MDC Trustee, prominent Coral Gables attorney and major chess supporter, Armando Bucelo Jr., and his father and chess master, for whom the tourney is named, Armando Bucelo Sr.
The top four places in the team competition were:
First Place: School for Advanced Studies – Wolfson Campus
Second Place: Mater Academy (last year’s winning team)
Third Place: Miami Senior High School
Fourth Place: Hialeah Senior High School
Scholarships were also awarded in these individual categories with the following results:
Overall Winner: Karel Gonzalez, 12th Grade, Mater Academy
Best 12th Grader: Cristian Hauser, Ft. Lauderdale High School
Best 11th Grader: Jorge Coria, School for Advanced Studies – Wolfson Campus
Best 10th Grader: Daniel Hernandez, Mater Academy
Best 9th Grader: Christian Jimenez, Miami Southwest Senior High School
In the past, many of these players have gone on to play for MDC’s renowned chess team which has consistently been one of the top chess squads in the country.
