Island Burden: Films about Cuba at Miami Dade College’s Tower Theater Apr. 17 – 30
A scene from Los Dioses Rotos, which opens the Island Burden: Films about Cuba showcase on Friday, Apr. 17.
Miami, April 14, 2009 - Filmmakers from all over the world have been fascinated with Cuba for decades. This has led to various interpretations of life on the island, from complex social and political issues to unyielding love and broken dreams.
This month, Miami Dade College (MDC), in collaboration with the Spanish Cultural Center of Miami and Latinofusión, will present a rare collection of films and documentaries by Cuban directors, as well as filmmakers from Spain, Russia, Germany, Brazil, and Poland, among other countries, regarding Cuba. Some of the films are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.
Island Burden: Films about Cuba opens on Friday, Apr. 17, at 8:30 p.m. with the U.S. premier of Los Dioses Rotos, a drama by Ernesto Daranas about a university professor who delves into Old Havana’s San Isidro neighborhood, a gateway into the world of prostitution. The showcase features more than 40 films that often look beyond the popular themes presented in many movies and books about Cuba.
The Florida premier of La Mala, about a woman driven to become a singer like Cuban legend “La Lupe,” will take place on closing night. The film’s star, Lena Burke, will perform a free concert following the screening at Cubaocho Art Center, 1465 S.W. Eight St, across from the Tower Theater.
Island Burden runs through Apr. 30 at MDC’s Tower Theater, 1508 S.W. Eight St., in the heart of Little Havana’s cultural district. Tickets will be available for purchase at the theater box office starting Friday, Apr. 10. Select films will be presented with English subtitles. Showtimes vary.
