MDC Phi Beta Lambda Chapters Win Big at State Leadership Conference

Phi Beta Lambda

Miami, April 6, 2009 - Ties knotted neatly, shoes polished, and speech cards in hand, more than 50 Miami Dade College (MDC) students joined hundreds of their college peers recently for the annual Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) State Leadership Conference (SLC) in Tampa, FL.

Phi Beta Lambda is a national organization for college students who have an interest in business and leadership. It promotes academic excellence and helps develop future business leaders through various activities and competitions at the district, state and national levels.

Three PBL chapters from the Kendall, Wolfson, and North Campus campuses competed and won big during the three day event. PBL sponsors conferences at the district, state, and national levels, which provide students the chance to compete in business-related performance tests such as management concepts, economic analysis, public speaking, accounting principles, and sales presentation.

One of the most important feats was the success of the Wolfson PBL Chapter, which after a two-year hiatus, rapidly re-organized last fall and had little time to prepare for the highly competitive state conference. Among the victories for the Wolfson PBL Chapter was having more than half of its team claim top places in seven of the events.

The Kendall Chapter was one of the biggest winners at this year’s SLC, winning first place in five categories including largest local chapter and a community service nod for the 2008 Amendment 8 campaign. Kendall also secured second place in 11 categories and fourth place in five categories.

North Campus’ PBL chapter also walked away victoriously, winning first place in “Economic Analysis and Decision Making.” The winner, Irina Reshetnikova, will join other MDC students competing at the national conference.

Like their PBL peers nationwide, MDC students and their advisors are now gearing up for an even greater challenge: the National Leadership Conference, scheduled for June 2009 in Anaheim, CA.

Wolfson’s new PBL Advisor, Dr. Robert Foran, added, “It’s great to see our students join the rank of Kendall and North, as winners and leaders. Overall, MDC was represented by a very diverse group of future business leaders from all campuses, as evidenced by the number of awards and the professional image of our students.”
