Miami, August 24, 2009 - The award-winning student newspaper, The Falcon Times, at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus announced today that it will launch an on-line edition to augment its existing print version.
“This is a very proud day for us,” said Falcon Times media adviser Manolo Barco. “The site will allow us to disseminate news to our readers as it’s happening.”
Before the creation of the new website, the newspaper's on-line version was in portable document format (PDF) images. The website will feature multimedia tools, such as videos and links for student feedback.
“It’s a new age for newspapers, having an on-line source for students to read our publication just makes sense,” said Rebeka Silva, Falcon Times editor-in-chief. “This allows us another avenue to explore in our growing process but it does not eliminate our print version, an essential and vital component of our learning.”
TheFalcon Times was established in 1961 and has garnered eight Pacemakers awards since. The Pacemaker is the highest journalistic honor that can be earned by student publications.
"Our educational program is dynamic and responsive to global marketplace developments,” said North Campus President Dr. José A. Vicente. “Thus, this new learning ground is focused on electronic journalism that is being established for our student journalists to hone important skills and stay current with industry trends."
Former student reporters of The Falcon Times have gone on to work for prestigious news organizations such as the Dallas Morning News, Newsday, The Miami Herald, The Palm Beach Post, The Orlando Sentinel, WSVN 7 and WPLG Local 10, among others.
The Falcon Times is free and 3,000 copies are published bi-weekly. It’s available on newspaper racks throughout the campus or in the Falcon Times newsroom (Room 4209). To view the new website, log on to www.mdc.edu/falcontimes.
The Wolfson Campus student newspaper, Metropolis, is also expected to add an on-line version later this year.
