MDC West Campus’ Executive Director Appointed to New Community Posts
Miami, September 28, 2009 - Dr. Toni Bilbao, executive director at Miami Dade College’s West Campus, has been appointed to the Doral Business Council (DBC) and the City of Doral Cultural Affairs Advisory Board, where she will serve as chairperson.
In addition, Dr. Bilbao has been nominated to receive an award at the City of Doral’s Night of Honor/Noche de Honor on Friday, Sept. 25, in commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The invitation-only event will take place at Miami International Mall.
Dr. Bilbao joined MDC in 2003 as associate provost of student services. In 2006, the MDC alumna had the privilege of opening the College’s newest site, the West Campus in Doral. As executive director, she oversees all academic, student services and administrative functions, from choosing the paint on the walls to hiring staff and accommodating the growing student population of nearly 4,000. Most recently, Dr. Bilbao was instrumental in garnering a $250,000 endowment from the City of Doral for student scholarships.
Born in Havana, Cuba, Dr. Bilbao moved to Miami in 1960. She began her career in education at Coconut Grove Elementary School and was a teacher and assistant principal at various schools throughout Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Prior to MDC, she held the position of vice president of university relations and development, as well as associate dean for student services at Florida International University’s College of Education.
