MDC Students and Community to Participate in National Day of Writing
Miami, October 16, 2009 - Whether typing, texting or even using traditional pen and paper, more than ever writing is an essential form of communication. To draw attention to the significance of writing and celebrate its remarkable variety, the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) will celebrate the First Annual National Day of Writing(http://www.ncte.org/dayonwriting) on Oct. 20 and Miami Dade College (MDC) will participate.
Three MDC faculty members are promoting the initiative: Wolfson Campus professor of English Dr. JoAnna Falco-Leshin started a local gallery titled The Forgiveness Garden which can be found under http://galleryofwriting.org/galleries/239434. Dr. Falco-Leshin will serve as curator of this gallery and Dr. Gary Davis will serve as assistant curator.
“We want to encourage people to get intimately involved with the process of writing,” said Dr. Falco-Leshin.
MDC students, faculty and staff, as well as the community at large, are invited to submit work leading up to the deadline on Oct. 16. Submissions can be poems, short stories, screenplays, and beyond, about forgiveness. The idea, said Dr. Falco-Leshin, is to create a Forgiveness Garden and let go of painful memories.
North Campus professor of English, Lisa Shaw, who is the Florida State Representative to the Two Year College English Association (TYCA), is also promoting this initiative through various disciplines at the college and state-wide through the TYCA. The TYCA gallery is entitled Southern Voices Speak and can be found under http://www.galleryofwriting.org/galleries/256904. Prof. Shaw is coordinating North Campus English Department efforts to involve multiple disciplines in a campus-wide write-in on October 20th. Interested faculty should contact her.
