Miami, September 29, 2009 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Arts and Philosophy Department will continue its successful jazz series, Jazz at Wolfson Presents, on Wednesday, Oct. 28, featuring Carlos Averhoff and his Quartet.

Cuban born saxophonist Carlos Averhoff was a founding member of the world renowned Latin band “Irakere,” along with Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, and Chucho Valdes, creating the rage for the Afro-Cuban jazz sound.

He is the recipient of the 1979 Grammy award for Best Latin Recording as well as receiving two subsequent Grammy nominations.  Twice he was awarded the prestigious Orden de la Cultura Nacional, one of Cuba’s highest civilian honors in recognition of his artistic excellence.

“It is an honor to have Averhoff and his band perform at the Wolfson Campus.  His performance will offer greater variety to the season as a whole and present an outstanding Latin Jazz concert for our students and the South Florida audience,” says jazz studies professor and series director Dr. Michael Di Liddo.

Continuing to offer the downtown community the finest jazz and in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Averhoff will be featured with his own group including Mike Orta, piano, Nicky Orta, bass, and Hector “Pocho” Neciosup, drums.

MDC’s Jazz at Wolfson Presents features live performances that run monthly from September through April. The concerts are free and open to the public.
