Miami Dade College’s Study Abroad Program Offers Students a Chance to Experience China
Miami, January 21, 2010 - As part of its vast and unique curriculum, Miami Dade College (MDC) gives students an opportunity to experience the world through a variety of study abroad programs in nearly 30 countries. For the first time, MDC students will be able to apply for macro and micro economics courses taught in China, the country with the third largest economy in the world.
The Study Abroad China program runs from May 7 to June 6. The 15 students selected will live and attend classes on the Songjiang Campus of Shaghai-Lixin University of Commerce. In addition to economics, they will be exposed to Chinese culture, including cooking classes, Tai Chi, calligraphy, and a train trip to Xian to see the legendary Terra Cotta Warriors, one of the greatest archeological discoveries of the twentieth century.
“We want this to be an academic and a cultural experience,” said Robert Foran, MDC economics professor and founder of the study abroad in China program.
The timing is right. China is fast becoming an economic powerhouse. Moreover, MDC and China have strengthened relations in recent years and new opportunities will soon emerge. In addition to training numerous groups of air traffic controllers and hospitality executives from China, the college has also been selected by the Chinese government to open a prestigious Confucius Institute where business classes, cultural programs, Mandarin language training and other courses will be provided in Miami. Just two weeks ago, a group of human resources professionals from China also visited MDC to meet with college officials regarding best practices.
The cost for flight, accommodations, visa, and most meals is $3,715 per student (excluding tuition). The program is open to all MDC students with a 2.5 GPA or higher. Scholarships are available for business majors, as well as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors. Upon completion, students will earn six credits toward their Associate in Arts degrees.
