Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at Miami Dade College Teaching Chinese Mandarin

Yao Li

Miami, February 23, 2010 - Chinese Professor Li Yao, a Fulbright scholar, is teaching Mandarin at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus as part of the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education, the national initiative enables young educators to refine their teaching skills and increase English language proficiency while supporting a cultural and educational exchange.

Professor Yao holds a master’s in foreign linguistics from Ocean University of China in Qingdao, Shandong Province.  In addition to Mandarin, he speaks English, French and Japanese. Most recently, he taught English at Wuhan University of Technology, Hubei Province, and is currently working on his doctorate in French.

At MDC, Prof. Yao has been teaching Chinese Mandarin since his arrival last fall. He will remain in Miami through May 2010. MDC, a first-time FLTA program host institution, coordinated room and board for Prof. Yao and provided a tuition waiver for two courses per semester, with at least one class in American culture.

In recent years, MDC has established a successful exchange with top Chinese officials and professionals. In addition to training air traffic controllers and hospitality executives from China, the college has also been selected by the Chinese government to open a prestigious Confucius Institute where business classes, cultural programs, Mandarin language training and other courses will be provided in Miami.
