MDC Journalism Speaker Series presents Emmy Award-winning Investigative Reporter Jim DeFede

Jim DeFede

Miami, February 8, 2010 - Jim DeFede prides himself on seeking the truth, which led him to his first journalism gig as a night cops reporter for The Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Washington. He then took his tough-as-nails attitude to the Miami NewTimes and The Miami Herald. Most recently, DeFede, a Brooklyn native, can be seen on CBS4 as a member of the station’s I-Team, where in 2009 he won his first Emmy Award.

On Wednesday, Feb. 24, at noon, Miami Dade College (MDC) will present DeFede as part of its acclaimed Journalism Speaker Series. The event will be held at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.

DeFede’s work has also been published in The New Republic, Newsday, The (London) Independent, Mother Jones, The Daily Beast Web site, and Miami Monthy. In 2002, DeFede published his first book, The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland, for which he won a 2003 Christopher Award for his ability to “affirm the highest values of the human spirit.”

Launched in 2008, the MDC Journalism Speaker Series provides an exchange and learning opportunity for students and the community at large. This year’s schedule will also feature Pulitzer prize-winning features writer Liz Balmaseda of the Palm Beach Post, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Patrick Farrell of The Miami Herald, South Florida Sun-Sentinel police reporter Sofia Santana, WSVN 7 photojournalist Ralph Rayburn and CBS 4 anchor Jawan Strader.

Each program includes a presentation by the journalists and a 15-minute question and answer session. All programs are free and open to the public.
