Miami, June 16, 2010 - Anibal Montes, a business administration major and 2010 graduate of Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus Honors College, recently participated in Stanford University’s prestigious Society for Entrepreneurship in Latin America (SELA) summit. Out of more than 400 applicants, he was able to secure one of only 24 delegation seats.
Each year, SELA hosts a conference that seeks out exceptional students from Latin America and provides them with unique experiences designed to hone students’ entrepreneurial skills. Participation in this event affords students the opportunity to interact with peers as well as accomplished professionals.
“They are people like you and me, but they had a vision, gathered the perfect teammates, worked hard, and made their vision feasible and real,” Montes remarked about his access to respected executives.
In addition to being mentored by successful entrepreneurs, the delegates learned how to develop a business plan and were challenged to create their own, which was presented to a board of venture capitalists. Montes and his teammates excelled in this area and generated considerable interest from the board. After their presentation, the potential investors provided feedback.
Following the weeklong summit, Montes stated that with the help of fellow MDC students, he intends to create a new SELA chapter at MDC in an effort to provide greater opportunity to future students interested in entrepreneurship. He is presently preparing to transfer to a four-year institution, with Stanford University’s accounting program topping his list.
“After returning from this experience, I literally feel like everything is possible,” he said.
