Global Scholars Coming to Miami Dade College for Fulbright Orientation

~Miami Dade College to host 160 Fulbright scholars ~

Miami, August 5, 2010 - Miami Dade College (MDC) will welcome 160 foreign students from more than 60 countries as part of the 2010 Fulbright Gateway Orientation. The participants, some of the brightest students worldwide, have been awarded Fulbright scholarships to work toward master’s and doctorate degrees at universities throughout the U.S.

MDC will serve as a bridge for the Scholars to become familiar with academic life and culture in the U.S. before beginning their studies. The College will host two orientation sessions on Aug. 09-13 and Aug. 16-20 at its Wolfson Campus, Emerging Technologies Center of the Americas, 500 N.E. Second Avenue, Building 7.

Sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and administered by the Institute of International Education, gateway orientations provide an overview of Fulbright goals and traditions, a basic understanding of the American education system, and practical advice on college life.

The orientation sessions will cover academic topics like U.S. government and politics and the history of American art, while graduate student life will focus on topics essential to their adjustment, such as culture shock, stress management, legal rights as a non-citizen and getting settled in a new place.

Cross-cultural workshops will address understanding both academic and American culture, as well as other cultures. Scholars will also have an opportunity to visit South Beach and take a boat tour of Biscayne Bay.
