MDC’S North Campus Celebrates Constitution Day with Many Activities for the Community
Miami, September 3, 2010 - Miami Dade College’s North Campus will celebrate Constitution Day on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010. Its Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Educational Center (MEEC) will do the same on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 11:30 a.m. Copies of the U.S. Constitution will be distributed to all attendees.
“The North Campus has organized multiple activities for our students and community in celebration of Constitution Day to commemorate the signing on September 17, 1787 and to encourage the development of good citizenship practices in a new generation of Americans,” said Dr. José A. Vicente, president of MDC’s North Campus.
A panel discussion on Celebrating the Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship will take place at the North Campus Lehman Theater (Room 5120) on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at noon. Panelists will include the Honorable Judges Orlando Prescott, Juvenile Division of Miami-Dade County, Ana Maria Pando, Civil Division of Miami-Dade County and Darrin P. Gayles, Criminal Division of Miami-Dade County. Participants will have the opportunity to pose questions to the panel on a variety of constitutional issues.
On Thursday, Sept. 16, at 11:30 a.m., at the MEEC, there will be a panel presentation and discussion on Freedom of Expression in Today’s Society in the atrium. Panelists will include Mr. Carlos Miller, Journalist from Photography is Not a Crime and Mr. Thomas R. Julin, Esq., Hunton & Williams LLP. Panelists will give a brief presentation and respond to students’ questions.
Students from several local high schools will participate in Constitution Day events at both locations. In addition, all events are free and open to the public.
The Justice in Motion community outreach bus and voter registration drive will be available at all Constitution Day Events.
