MDC Law Center Director Elected to American Association for Paralegal Education Board

Tom Nguyen, Miami Dade College law center director

Miami, November 16, 2010 - Miami Dade College (MDC) law center director Tom Nguyen was recently elected to the board of American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE) as secretary.

Established in 1981, AAfPE’s roots go back to the mid-1970s when the American Bar Association sponsored the first conferences for paralegal educators. Its mission is to increase and improve access to the legal system, promote quality paralegal education, develop educational standards and encourage professional growth that will prepare graduates to perform a significant role in the delivery of legal services.

“As a five year AAfPE member from the southeast region, I have seen first-hand how AAfPE encourages professional growth,” said Nguyen. “AAfPE has truly been a haven for paralegal educators who face common challenges. The fellowship and service among the members truly make AAfPE an elite professional organization.”

A veteran educator with an extensive legal background, Nguyen has taught at other institutions, including the University of Miami; chaired an online paralegal program; taught middle-school in the inner-cities of Los Angeles; and once worked as a paralegal and as an attorney.

He earned a J.D. from the University of Miami, a bachelor’s from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and as a college student served as a White House intern. At the moment, Nguyen is finalizing requirements for his Ph.D. in higher education leadership at Florida Atlantic University.

In his new role with AAfPE, Nguyen hopes to help with records management, work tirelessly to take accurate notes and build a strong rapport with all members. “I appreciate this opportunity to help ensure that AAfPE’s future is every bit as bright as its proud past,” said Nguyen.
