MDC's 2010 Women’s Volleyball Team

Miami, November 15, 2010 - Securing an undefeated record is a challenge in any sport, but Miami Dade College’s (MDC) women’s volleyball team has captured the most coveted spot in collegiate sports.

The Lady Sharks volleyball team is currently number one in the U.S., and has maintained that spot for five consecutive weeks thanks to an undefeated record.

Presently, the Lady Sharks are 33-0, and have remained undefeated in both the final (13-0) and regional (19-0) conferences.

The team is now qualified for the 2010 NJCAA National Tournament Nov. 18-20 in West Plains, Missouri.

The Lady Sharks are led by freshman Marifranchi Rodriguez, a middle blocker who was once named NJCAA Player of the Week and FCCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Rodriguez posted combined stats of 4 kills, 32 blocks, 24 digs, and 8 aces. Also helping to lead the Lady Sharks to their undefeated season is sophomore Mima Hajdukovic, ranked fourth in the state for assists, 7.8 per game and fourth in the state for a hitting efficiency of 43.8%.

Sophomore Yenifer Calcano, ranked eighth in the state for kills per game, 3.4 and ninth for blocks per game.

The team recently defeated Florida State College at Jacksonville to win their fourth consecutive FCCAA State Championship. It was MDC's dominant attack and fierce defense that led to the defeat of Jacksonville.
