MDC North Campus’ 2011 Festival of the Arts to Celebrate Multicultural Expression
Miami, March 18, 2011 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC)North Campus will present its 2011 Festival of the Arts, March 23 – 30, which celebrates arts and humanities featuring stellar work by MDC students, as well as major artists. The weeklong celebration boasts daily activities at the North Campus and at its Carrie P. Meek Center. All events are free and open to the public.
On Wednesday, Mar. 23, at 11 a.m., North Campus President Dr. José A. Vicente will announce the winner of the 2011 Festival of the Arts Poster Competition at the Lehman Theater. The North Campus Chamber Singers, Falcon Jazz Band, Pen PlayersImprov Troupe and surprise guests will kick-off the Festival with a rousing program of entertainment.
This year, the Festival brings sculptor Rafael Consuegra, renowned Brazilian photographer Renato Freitas, Miami City Ballet principal dancers Carlos Miguel Guerra and Jennifer Kronenberg, Haitian artist Kristo, a searing new translation of Jean Cocteau’s masterpiece play The HumanVoice, performances by the Pen Players Improv Troupe, the North Campus Chamber Singers and the Falcon Jazz Band, Hip Hop at Carrie Meek Center, classical music of women composers and award-winning new student compositions that reflect and nourish the multicultural splendors of South Florida’s uniquely multicultural community.
“We are elated to celebrate our students and our community here at the North Campus, where Miami Dade College began,” Dr. Vicente said. “There is a renaissance of the arts at North Campus, in fact, and this Festival of the Arts is perhaps the best reaffirmation of our commitment to the arts as an integral part not only of education but also of the cultural life of our unique South Florida community.”
