Miami Dade College Awarded Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievement

Miami, May 6, 2011 - Miami Dade College (MDC) was recently awarded highest honors at Miami Today’s 12th Annual Gold Medal Awards. The awards are presented to organizations and individuals who have already received recognition over the past 12 months for their work and service in the Miami community. MDC has received this distinction several times in the past.

MDC President Eduardo J. Padrón and MDC Board of Trustee Marielena A. Villamil accepted the Gold Medal Award, presented by Tony Argiz, CEO and managing partner at Morrison, Brown, Argiz & Farra, LLC.

“I really accept this award on behalf of the men and women who labor tirelessly at MDC and make that institution such a great place for all,” Dr. Padrón said.

In addition, MDC Professor Elizabeth Nicoli-Suco, who teaches mathematics at the Wolfson Campus, received a Bronze Medal Award. Professor Nicoli-Suco was named the 2010 U.S. Professor of the Year for the state of Florida by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Miami Dade College is the nation’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of more than 170,000 students. It is also the nation’s top producer of associate in arts and science degrees. The college’s seven campuses and two centers offer more than 300 distinct degree programs including several baccalaureate degrees in education, public safety, supervision and management and nursing. In fact, its academic and workforce training programs have served as national models of excellence. MDC is also renowned for its rich cultural programming. It is home of the Miami Book Fair International, Miami International Film Festival, the Cultura del Lobo performing arts series, the National Historic Landmark Miami Freedom Tower, a sculpture park and a large art gallery and theater system. MDC has served nearly 2,000,000 students since it opened its doors in 1960.
