MDC Announces Application Period for Francisco Scholarships

Last year’s scholarship recipients.

Miami, November 9, 2011 - Applications are now being accepted for the longstanding Francisco Foundation Scholarships at Miami Dade College. The application period will close December 2, 2011. Scholarship winners will be invited to an awards ceremony with the Foundation Board in early 2012.

As is customary for the Francisco Foundation, winners are selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership, community service, academic excellence and a love of democracy and freedom. The scholarships will be awarded to first year students. Applicants are required to submit a typed, double-spaced, 1,100 word essay explaining what freedom and democracy mean to them in English, Spanish or Creole. They should also address what sort of sacrifices should be made to ensure the safeguarding of freedom and democracy. Along with the essay, applicants must also include their most recent transcript, a current resume, and two letters of recommendation attesting to academic performance, leadership and character.

Completed application packets should be mailed to:

            The Francisco Foundation Scholarship

            P.O. Box 654714

            Miami, Fl 33165

Application packets may also be submitted to the financial aid office at any of the College’s Campuses.

The scholarships were created in honor of Rogelio “Francisco” Gonzalez Corzo who was executed by Fidel Castro’s government in 1961 when he was 28-years old for attempts to subvert the dictatorship. He was the head of the underground anti-Castro resistance effort called “Movement to Recover the Revolution.”

“He was also a brilliant student; a man of unparalleled intelligence and charisma,” said Miami-Dade County Commissioner, Sen. Javier Souto from District 10, who serves on the Francisco Foundation Board. “He was a student of democracy and human rights whose life was cut way too short by Castro.”
