Miami, November 9, 2011 - Miami Dade College (MDC), in partnership with Take Stock in Children (TSIC) of Miami-Dade County and Miami-Dade County Public Schools, will host the first-ever Strides for Education 5K Walk/Run starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the college’s Kendall Campus. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. The walk is part of an effort to raise scholarship dollars for the county’s low-income and at-risk youth.

With rising tuition costs and significant increases of other college-related expenses, children throughout Florida are struggling more than ever to achieve their dreams of a college education.

“Take Stock in Children's Strides for Education 5k is the perfect way to involve the local community in our efforts and help raise funding for our scholars who desire to earn a postsecondary education," says Tom Albano, executive director of Take Stock in Children of Miami Dade County. "Our goal is to continue growing our program each year so that we may support even more students along the path to success."

The Strides for Education 5k Walk/Run is open to all individuals, families, companies, and local organizations, and will feature family-friendly activities, giveaways, and much more. Registration is $35 per person and free for all students. All proceeds going to benefit Take Stock in Children, a statewide non-profit organization helping low-income and at-risk youth break the cycle of poverty by providing scholarships, mentors and hope. Take Stock in Children of Miami Dade County currently serves more than 500 students in grades 6-12 annually. To learn more about Take Stock in Children, please call 888-322-4673 or visit

Housed at MDC’s Wolfson Campus, the program offers a comprehensive plan of success for selected students who must sign a contract to stay in school, maintain good grades, remain drug and crime-free, and meet once a week with a mentor. In turn, TSIC provides each student with a four-year tuition scholarship to college.
