Miami Dade College Presents CINTAS Exhibition, Minimum/Maximum

Miami, January 20, 2012 - The Miami Dade College (MDC) Art Gallery System will present Minimum/Maximum, the inaugural exhibition of the CINTAS Fellows Collection at the Freedom Tower after MDC assumed the stewardship of the Collection and Fellowship awards last year. The exhibition opens Wednesday, Jan. 25.
Featuring 22 artworks by 18 artists, including Baruj Salinas, José Mijares and Nelida Otero, the exhibition reflects on a dichotomy prevalent in modern painting in general. One represents the minimalist view and use of the canvas to create a geometric and abstract world of muted colors. The other, rendered in the vivid colorful palette of the Caribbean, is populated with the full blown, voluptuous figures of the Caribbean moving sensuously under the brilliant light of Cuba, painted from memory and transplanted to a similar shore.
“Miami Dade College’s Art Gallery System is thrilled to present the first exhibition rotation of the prestigious CINTAS Foundation Fellows Collection. We are honored to exhibit and care for this important collection of Cuban artists and the many historically influential works within its holdings. Minimum/Maximum represents the strength and verisimilitude of painters among the CINTAS Fellows, and visually expresses the continued movement and ever-changing dialogue within post-modern and contemporary painting conversation,” said Jeremy Mikolajczak, AGS executive director.
Artists in the exhibition represent what will soon be fifty years of the CINTAS Fellows Collection and three generations of Cuban artists, from Zilia Sanchez (Tierra,The Earth, painted in 1938) to Jose Bedia (Una Guia en la Subida from 2006).
The exhibition will remain on display through May 4, free and open to the public, Tuesday – Friday from 12 noon – 5 p.m.
About the CINTAS Fellowship Program
The CINTAS Fellowship Program encourages creative development in architecture, literature, music composition and the visual arts. The Foundation was established with funds from the estate of Oscar B. CINTAS (1887-1957), the former Cuban ambassador to the United States, a prominent industrialist and patron of the arts. In June of 2011, the CINTAS Foundation entered into an extended loan to MDC’s Art Gallery System (AGS) of the CINTAS Fellows Collection, comprised of nearly 300 pieces by artists of Cuban descent living outside Cuba who have received prestigious CINTAS Fellowships, awarded since 1963.
