Miami, December 14, 2011 - The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives (CLACI) at Miami Dade College (MDC), in collaboration with the Miami International Press Association (MIPA) and the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at the University of Miami, presents a panel discussion titled Is Cuba in Transition?at 8:30 a.m.Tuesday, Jan. 31, at MDC’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. This event is free and open to the public; registration required.

In November, Cuba announced it would allow citizens and permanent residents living on the island to buy and sell real estate for the first time in decades. This panel will assess the possible effects of that measure, as well as other recent reforms, on the Cuban population and whether those changes will in any way alter the current political regime. Other topics for discussion will include whether Cuba is moving toward the China model by adopting more flexible, market-oriented economic rules while maintaining a system of political authoritarianism; the repercussions of these changes on U.S. foreign policy toward Cuba; and the connection between civil society in Cuba and the exile community in the U.S.

Panelists will include Carlos Saladrigas, co-chairman of Cuba Study Group; Marifeli Perez-Stable, professor of sociology at FIU’s School of International and Public Affairs; and Ariel Armony, CLAS director and professor of International Studies at UM. Carlos Barrezueta, executive director of CLACI at MDC and David Adams, U.S. and Miami editor for Poder magazine,  will moderate the panel. The panel is part of a series of policy programs on current events spearheaded by MIPA.

The presentation will be in English, followed by a Q & A in English and Spanish.

Complimentary parking will be available at the Wolfson Campus parking garage, located at 500 N.E. Second Ave., through the N.E. Fifth Street entrance. Please inform parking staff you are attending the panel.
