MDC’s Institute for Health Informatics to Host Third Annual Electronic Health Record Symposium Jan. 31

Miami, January 26, 2012 - The Institute for Health Informatics at Miami Dade College (MDC) will host the third annual Electronic Health Record Symposium at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 31, at the Wolfson Campus. Janet Marchibroda and Janet Hofmeister will be the keynote speakers.
This year, the event will showcase hands-on experience with new technologies; provide networking opportunities; and bring together physicians and experts to discuss topics, such as the finalization of meaningful use, electronic health records (EHR) vendor certification and policy changes.
Janet Marchibroda who serves as the Chair of the Health Information Technology (IT) Initiative for the Bipartisan Policy Center’s (BPC’s) Health Project, will provide an overview of the common attributes of high performing health care organizations and new models of care as well as the health IT and health information exchange capabilities needed to achieve high performance.
Janet Hofmeister, PMP, who serves as the Senior Program Manager for the Florida Health Information Exchange (HIE) at Harris Healthcare Solutions, will describe the HIE and the services offered, as well as the benefits and best ways to organize a group/practice with Direct Secure Messaging (DSM) service.
The symposium will also include a panel discussion with top experts in Health Information Technology. Lisa Rawlins, Executive Director, South Florida Regional Extension Center, Doris Crain, Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer, Broward Health and Richard E. Wild, Chief Medical Officer, Atlanta Regional Office, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will provide a panel discussion on the keynote addresses.
For MDC students, this symposium will provide a question-and-answer session regarding informatics in healthcare, and will educate and prepare them to assist physicians with the implementation and training of EHRs.
The Medical Campus at Miami Dade College chartered the Institute for Health Informatics in 2009. The Institute is composed of faculty and administrators who are dedicated to researching best practices for the integration of health informatics across the curriculum. The Institute was formed with the goal of providing MDC graduates new career opportunities and serving as a source of information for the south Florida healthcare community regarding health IT.
