MDC’s Confucius Institute to Celebrate Chinese New Year with Nanjing University Traditional Instruments Orchestra
Miami, February 3, 2012 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Confucius Institute will celebrate the Chinese New Year with three performances by the visiting Nanjing University Traditional Instruments Orchestra (NUTIO) – at Kendall Campus on Monday, Feb. 6, and then North and Wolfson Campuses on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Performances are free and open to the public.
NUTIO is present in collaboration with Student Life at these campuses and the Office of International Education. Sponsored by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing, the 23-member orchestra is touring in only six U.S. cities, and Miami is one of them. They will perform both Chinese and western music using traditional Chinese instruments, such as bowed and plucked strings, wind and percussion instruments.
Founded in 1996, NUTIO is widely considered as one of the best college student orchestras in China. It is composed of undergraduates and graduate students from various academic disciplines, such as humanity and social sciences, business, law, natural sciences, engineering and medical science. As a student orchestra, NUTIO mainly gives performances in the form of instrumental ensemble, unison, small ensemble and solo. Its specialty includes presenting music which represents the grace and beauty of the picturesque southern Jiangsu Province in southern China.
Following each performance, there will be cultural activities, such as Chinese calligraphy, Tai Chi and Chinese refreshment courtesy of the Confucius Institute.
