Miami Dade College to Host European Union’s Ambassador to the U.S., Mr. João Vale de Almeida
Miami, February 8, 2012 - Miami Dade College (MDC), the European-American Chamber of Commerce New York and the European Bi-National Chambers of Commerce in Miami will host a reception for Ambassador João Vale de Almeida of Portugal, Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the United States, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the college’s National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower. The working media is invited to attend.
At the reception, Ambassador Vale de Almeida will discuss The Euro: From Crisis to Recovery.
As Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the U.S., the Ambassador represents European Commission President José Manuel Barroso of Portugal and President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy. Prior to his appointment in Washington, D.C., he served as the Director General for External Relations at the European Commission, the European Union’s executive body. He also was the Head of Cabinet for President Barroso and held several senior positions in the European Commission while working closely, in different capacities, with former Commission Presidents Jacques Delors, Jacques Santer and Romano Prodi. Before joining President Barroso's team in 2004, Mr. Vale de Almeida held a senior position in the Directorate General for Education and Culture and served as Deputy Chief Spokesman of the European Commission. He holds a degree in history from the University of Lisbon and has studied journalism and management in the United States, France, Japan and the United Kingdom.
MDC has a rich tradition of bringing world leaders and thinkers to the community. Ambassador Vale de Almeida’s visit is very timely given recent economic developments in the EU.
