Miami Dade College Recognized by Dade Heritage Trust for its Freedom Tower Restoration

Miami, April 26, 2012 - Miami Dade College (MDC) was recently presented a 2012 Dade Heritage Annual Preservation Award by Dade Heritage Trust (DHT) for its “top to bottom” exterior restoration of its Freedom Tower, as well as the interior restoration of the mezzanine level. The award acknowledges the proper rehabilitation or restoration of a structure to an earlier or original appearance, or its adaptation to a new use in a manner that requires minimal change to the defining characteristics of the building and its site. 

DHT, Miami’s largest non-profit historic preservation organization, honored MDC for its commitment to the preservation and restoration of this beloved National Historic Landmark at its Annual Awards Celebration. The restoration work was done by Rodriguez and Quiroga Architects, Kaufman Lynn Construction and Aeon Preservation Services LLC.

To encourage an appreciation of Miami’s architectural and cultural heritage, DHT has recognized outstanding achievement in the conservation of Miami’s historic resources since 1982. DHT’s Annual Preservation Awards are presented in the categories of recently completed Restoration/Rehabilitation/Adaptive-Use Projects, Preservation Work by an Organization, and Preservation Work by an Individual.

Founded in 1972 and now celebrating its 40th Anniversary, DHT is the leading voice for saving Miami’s historic places. The 1000-member organization works through advocacy, education and restoration. Projects have included the Cape Florida Lighthouse, the Freedom Tower, the Miami Circle, the original Old Miami High School, Dr. Jackson’s 1905 Office, the Sears Tower and the Historic Miami City Cemetery. DHT also publishes Preservation Today magazine.
