Miami Dade College’s School of Health Sciences Dean Wins 2012 Healthcare Heroes® Award

Miami, May 22, 2012 - The School of Health Sciences Dean at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Medical Campus, Dr. Pete Gutierrez, has been honored with a 2012 Healthcare Heroes® Award from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. The winners were announced at the Chamber’s 15th Annual Health Care Heroes® Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, May 22, at Jungle Island.

Dr. Gutierrez began his tenure at MDC in 2006 as director of the Physician Assistant Program, and was later named Dean of the School of Health Sciences. In 2009, he helped launch the Miami Rescue Mission Health Clinic, a partnership with the College’s Medical Campus. Under Dr. Gutierrez’s direction, the clinic serves homeless and underserved residents, while also providing a clinical site for MDC’s physician assistant, nursing, and other health science students to gain hands-on experience. Prior to pursuing his dream of becoming a physician, Dr. Gutierrez served as a Miami police officer for 11 years.  

Other MDC staff recognized as Healthcare Heroes® in the past includes former Medical Campus interim President, Dr. Kathie Sigler, who received the 2008 Healthcare Heroes® AXA Advisors Lifetime Achievement Award, and Professor Frances Aronovitz in 2004 in the Nursing category.
