MDC Tower Theater Celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the Popular Dos Orillas Series
Miami, May 18, 2012 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Tower Theater recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the popular Dos Orillas series with a special presentation: The Contributions of Cuban Women in the Institution and Restoration of the Republic. The event featured a panel with Laida Carro Hernández, Yolanda Huerga and Sylvia Iriondo, who discussed the importance of this aspect of Cuban life. The City of Miami honored the anniversary with a special proclamation.
Created by Dr. Mercedes Cros Sandoval, MDC professor emeritus in the department of social sciences, and co-presented with the Academia de la Historia de Cuba, Dos Orillas (Two Shores) is a monthly series that takes place the third Wednesday of every month (except July and August) and is free to the public. The program consists of a Cuba-themed documentary, and a question-and-answer session usually led by a panel or relevant expert.
Past presentations have covered the history of the bolero, Cuban flora and fauna, an homage to José Martí and one to Benny Moré, and African influence on Cuban culture, among many others. The first event featured three documentaries shown over three days, culminating with a panel-led discussion on Cuban identity.
The remaining dates for this year are June 8, September 14, October 12, November 9 and December 14.
Dr. Sandoval is the author of Worldview, the Orichas, and Santería: Africa to Cuba and Beyond (University Press of Florida, 2007). She is a world-renowned expert on Santería and Yoruba and Cuban mythologies.
The Tower Theater at MDC has been dubbed as one of the “10 great places to see a movie in splendor” by USA Today.
