Miami, August 6, 2012 - Unfinished Spaces, the award-winning documentary about the architecture of Cuba’s National Art Schools (now the Instituto Superior de Arte) will have its U.S. commercial debut at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Tower Theater at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 10.

At the end of this first screening, a Q&A will be conducted by Cuban-American architect Rafael Fornés. Along with the late renowned Cuban architect Nicolás Quintana, Mr. Fornés is one of the founders of The Center of Urban Studies for Cuba and the Caribbean. A reception sponsored by Cubaocho Art and Research Center and Stefano’s Wine and Liquor will follow the presentation.

Cuba's ambitious National Art Schools project, designed by three young architects in the wake of Castro's Revolution, was neglected, nearly forgotten, and ultimately rediscovered as a visionary architectural masterpiece. The construction of the radical designs of these three visionary architects began in 1961, and the school's first classes soon followed. Dancers, musicians and artists from all over the country reveled in the beauty of the schools, but construction was abruptly halted and the architects and their designs were deemed irrelevant in the prevailing political climate. Forty years later the schools are in use, but remain unfinished and decaying.

Unfinished Spaces, directed by Alysa Nahmias and Benjamin Murray, has won multiple awards. Among them:

Jury Honorable Mention, Knight Documentary Competition at 2012 Miami International Film Festival and the coveted Jameson FIND Your Audience Award at 2012 Independent Spirit Awards.

Architectural Digest just named Unfinished Spaces one of its “ten essential films from the past decade” on architecture, design, and urban planning.
