Inaugural Baccalaureate Class of Biological Sciences Students at MDC’s School of Science Receives White Coats
Miami, September 28, 2012 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC’s) School of Science recently celebrated a milestone moment for students in the Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences degree program. At a White Coat Ceremony, the first 31 students who were admitted to the program, which includes areas of study in Biotechnology, Biopharmaceutics, and Science Education, were formally “coated” and inducted as members of the inaugural class.
This degree program allows graduates to tap into the burgeoning demand for biological scientists with four-year degrees, projected to increase by 21 percent during the next decade. Degree candidates can take advantage of the seamless transfer of existing credits toward the degree and the many other benefits of a quality education at MDC, including significantly lower tuition compared to other institutions, and the ability to access classes with convenient schedules and locations.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Ann M. Bartuska, Deputy Under Secretary for the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) Research, Education, and Economics Mission area. She is expected to focus her remarks on the national landscape of science education, research innovation and the workforce. Bartuska is an ecosystem ecologist, who represents the USDA on the Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Sustainability of the White House National Science and Technology Council and also is co-chair of the Science and Technology for Sustainability Roundtable of the National Academies.
