MDC Live Arts Presents the U.S. Premiere of Nuevo Ballet Español’s Cambio de Tercio

Nuevo Ballet Espanol 3

Nuevo Ballet Español will perform Cambio de Tercio in the U.S. for the first time.

Miami, September 17, 2012 - Renowned Nuevo Ballet Español will present Cambio de Tercio for the first time in the U.S. as part of Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts performing arts series at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5 – 6, at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium. These extraordinary performers will kick off MDC Live Art’s 22nd season.

At the forefront of emerging trends in Spanish dance and flamenco, Nuevo Ballet Españoldraws on traditional dance, a 21st-century pop sensibility and folkloric influences from Andalucía. In Cambio de Tercio, Angel Rojas and Carlos Rodríguez, two of Spain’s most influential choreographers, deliver a dazzling mix of traditional and contemporary styles, performed by the full company of dancers and musicians.

“The artistry of Rojas and Rodríguez is absolutely thrilling,” said MDC Live Arts’ Executive Director Kathryn Garcia. “Nuevo Ballet Español is sure to electrify Miami audiences with two unforgettable performances.”

They also explore the idea of transformation: from the street to the stage, from yesterday to today, from Spanish dance to flamenco music. As the British newspaper Metro raved, “Rojas and Rodríguez put a fresh spin on flamenco that taps into passions both old and new.”

Rojas and Rodríguez, who founded Nuevo Ballet Español in 1995 and are its principal dancers, shared the Best Dancer Award at the Spanish Annual Dance and Flamenco Choreography Awards in 1994. Over the years, they have participated in many international festivals and their choreographies are now performed by other companies. In 2000, they were named Outstanding Dancers and Best Spanish Dance Company at the Jerez DDOO awards. They were awarded the Villa Prize Pilar López for Best Dance Performer 2005.

Nuevo Ballet Español received the First Prize UP for Best Flamenco and Spanish Dance Company in 1999 and the Villa de Madrid Prize for Best Dance Interpreters in 2005. The company has toured the world, including Spain, Holland, France, Hong Kong, Belgium, Venezuela, the Philippines, Finland, Japan, and Portugal.

MDC Live Arts is an initiative of MDC’s Cultural Affairs Department, created in 1990 as Cultura del Lobo. MDC Live Arts continues a long legacy of bringing unique, diverse performances from around the world to South Florida.  The mission is to present the newest, most challenging contemporary and culturally specific work being created in the U.S. and abroad, with an emphasis on the Americas, and to present work that is reflective of our multi-ethnic community. Our series brings exceptional national and international performing artists to the region and provides opportunities for extensive community engagement through residency activities within the eight-campus college system, and through partnerships with other local arts providers.

Tickets for Cambio de Tercio are $70, $50 and $30 for the general public; and $10 for MDC students, who must show valid identification for student tickets.
