Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus Hosts Seven50 Summit Jan. 23 - 24
Miami, January 22, 2013 -
Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus will host A Look Ahead: Trends and Opportunities, the second in the series of public summits as part of Seven50, a plan for growing a more prosperous, more desirable Southeast Florida during the next 50 years and beyond. The summit will take place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, at MDC’s Wolfson Campus. A live webcast will be provided for those who cannot attend. In addition, there will be an informal reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at MDC’s Freedom Tower.
The Summit is co-hosted by Victor Dover of Dover, Kohl & Partners planning firm. Speakers will include Andrés Duany of Duany-Plater Zyberk, a nationally-recognized architecture and town planning firm, as well as political and cultural leaders from Southeast Florida’s seven counties. They will discuss a wide variety of key topics the region will be facing in the century ahead, including adapting to climate change, improving higher education, creating a balanced transportation system, and staying economically competitive in a changing global market.
“We are excited to host Seven50, which will allow the public the opportunity to design the future alongside urban planners and transportation experts,” said MDC Wolfson Campus President Madeline Pumariega.
Activities will include
keypad polls throughout the day and recording videos with their visions for the region. Attendees
will also get a first look at a comprehensive model for the seven counties in 2060, which is currently under development, and provide input for the creation of alternate future scenarios.
“Seven50 is the public’s chance to have a voice in the future of Southeast Florida, said Marcela Camblor, Seven50 project director.
Unlike other emerging regions, Southeast Florida does not have an investment plan to ensure global economic competitiveness and the best-possible quality of life for residents. That’s why Seven50 is so important. It’s a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Southeast Florida to come together and plan the brightest future for the region.”
More than 500 residents, urban planners, business and civic leaders, elected officials, government leaders, and activists attended the first Summit that held last June in Delray Beach.
members of six workgroups have been meeting throughout Southeast Florida and actively focused on key topics affecting the region. They will reconvene at this Summit and discuss the goals they developed for their respective topics, including education, workforce and economic development; development patterns, environment, agriculture, and more.
Seven50 (“seven counties, 50 years”) is a blueprint for growing a more prosperous, more desirable Southeast Florida during the next 50 years and beyond. The plan is being developed to help build stronger, more diverse communities, create jobs and a resilient economy, and protect the fragile ecosystem in what is quickly becoming one of the world’s most important mega-regions. Spearheaded by the Southeast Florida Regional Partnership (SFRP), a unique collaboration of more than 200 public, private, and civic stakeholders, Seven50 is mapping the strategy for the best-possible quality of life for the more than six million residents of Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties. The plan is being created through a series of public summits, workshops, online outreach and high-impact studies led by the region’s top thinkers. Seven50 has been made possible by a grant from the US Department of Housing & Urban Development’s Sustainable Communities Initiative. For more information, visit www.seven50.org.
