Miami, February 6, 2013 - It’s been often said, “It takes a special kind of person to be a nurse.”  That couldn’t be truer of MDC’s nursing faculty.  Five MDC nursing professors have been chosen by Online Schools of Florida for having “really made – or are making – a difference in the field.”

The recipients of this award – professors at MDC’s renowned Medical Campus – are among a top-tier faculty that offers students real-world experience in a variety of settings.  The four-year curriculum they teach helps build on students’ natural compassion with the competency, critical-thinking skills, and cultural awareness needed to help future nurses be exemplary health-care providers.

The five winners include:

Dr. Yamina Alvarez, with her 35 years of experience in the field and teaching, has won the Florida Nursing Association’s South Region 2012 Nurse Educator Award and the Joan K. Stout R.N. Endowed Teaching Chair in Nursing at Miami Dade College, in 2012.

Dr. Marie O. Etienne was named Haitian Woman of the Year by the National Center of the Haitian Apostolate and appointed to serve on the National Nursing Committee of the American Red Cross. Dr. Etienne was recognized by the Florida Nursing Association when she received the South Region 2012 Advanced Practice Nursing Award.

Constance Miller was honored with the Community Engagement Educator Award from Florida Campus Compact in 2010 and the Florida Nursing Association’s South Region Community Action Award in 2012. In her 20-plus years at MDC, she’s played a vital role in the College’s nursing and community outreach programs.

Dr. Lenora Yates, a School of Nursing senior faculty member at MDC, Dr. Yates was recently appointed President of the Miami Chapter, Black Nurses Association Inc. She’s also chair of the Genetic Nursing Program.

Dr. Carol Petrozella was honored as the Florida Nursing Association’s 2011 Nurse of the Year. She was recognized for her engaging teaching style and ability to enhance learning in the classroom.
