Miami Dade College Students to Lead Hands-On Banking Workshops Sponsored by Wells Fargo

Students, MDC Wolfson Campus' School of Business

Miami, February 26, 2013 - Miami Dade College ’s (MDC) School of Business students will take on the very important task of mentoring their peers on fundamental financial decisions, as part of the Students Teaching Students: Hands on Banking Project. MDC’s School of Business, in collaboration with Wells Fargo Bank and the Center for Financial Training (CFT), will offer a number of workshops at the Wolfson and Kendall Campuses, through April.

The project’s goals are to (1) equip students and families with information to make sound, financial decisions, especially when paying for college; (2) reduce the number of defaulted student loans; and (3) raise financial literacy awareness among first-generation college students. The program also includes Train-the-Trainer sessions and Financial Literacy workshops.  Both components will incorporate hands-on banking to help student trainers and participants on how to organize a budget, understand credit and the importance of saving money, and manage and repay a loan, among other topics.

CFT and MDC’s School of Business will identify lead teachers that will help in the recruitment of students, training, and facilitation of open forums.  Students completing the training will receive a certificate of completion. Students completing the Train-the-Trainer session and presenting in the open forum will be awarded tuition scholarships.

All sessions are free and are open to all MDC students.
