Miami Dade College’s ‘Jazz at Wolfson Presents’ Wolfson Jazz Ensembles

Miami, March 15, 2013 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) popular jazz series, Jazz at Wolfson Presentswill feature the Wolfson Jazz Ensembles on Tuesday, March. 19, at the downtown Wolfson Campus. The evening concert is free and open to the public.

 Directed by Dr. Michael Di Liddo, the jazz ensembles are comprised of three groups. The Horace Silver group takes its name from the legendary pianist and composer of the 1950s and’60s. The Blue Note group pays tribute to the famed jazz record label of numerous classic and groundbreaking recordings. Both groups help young jazz musicians develop by presenting a wide range of jazz styles.

 The program’s most mature group, the Hard Bop Jazz Ensemble, has included some of South Florida’s finest emerging musicians. The ensemble has performed at major jazz festivals in Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands. The group is highly decorated, receiving DownBeat magazine awards in 2003 and 2007.

 “The students this term have been extraordinary,” says Dr. Di Liddo. “They took on challenging works by some of jazz’s most celebrated musicians and composers, including Horace Silver, Chick Corea, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, and Lee Morgan. They are anxious to share their experience of studying and performing the repertoire of these jazz greats.”

 Jazz at Wolfson Presentsis sponsored by MDC’sArts and Philosophy Department. The series features live performances that run monthly from September through April.
