Miami, February 20, 2013 -
Internationally acclaimed and followed Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez will speak at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Freedom Tower on Monday, April 1, 2013, at 2 p.m. She will participate in a conversation with community leaders and students, which will also be streamed live from the iconic and fitting venue. In addition, Sanchez will be presented with the Miami Dade College Presidential Medal for championing human rights. Past honorees include Lech Walesa, Mikhail Gorbachev, President Bill Clinton, Muhammad Yunus, Madeleine Albright, Jose Maria Aznar, Alvaro Uribe and others.
Sanchez is no stranger to MDC. She appeared at the 2011 Miami Book Fair International via phone call and a pre-recorded video message. Most recently, earlier this month, she participated in the live program, Avanza Cuba, via phone call, a collaboration between MDC and TV Marti. However, the April 1 event marks the first time she will appear live and in person.
“It is such an honor to not only have Yoani speak at what we affectionately call Democracy’s College, but at the Freedom Tower. I can think of no better venue for this historic conversation in Miami. Like our slogan, Yoani is MDC,” said Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, president of Miami Dade College. “This is a momentous event for our students and the community.”
