MDC’s Tower Theater to Present the Theatrical Re-Release of the Classic, Cuban-American Film, El Super

El Super - L

A Scene from El Super

Miami, April 18, 2013 - South Florida movie buffs are in for a real treat!  Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Tower Theater will present the commercial re-release of El Super, Friday, April 26.  The indie film won worldwide acclaim when it was first introduced in 1979. It’s based on the original play by Ivan Acosta and directed by Leon Ichaso and Orlando Jimenez-Leal.

The movie depicts a newly-arrived Cuban family to the U.S. and its struggles to hold on to their customs and family unit, in a frigid place far away from the country they left behind.  It’s a slice-of-life look at the toils of Roberto and Aurelia, and their 17-year old daughter, Aurelita.  The protagonist, a superintendent of an apartment building in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood, spends his days taking out the trash, firing up the boiler, and repairing windows, while thinking of the Cuba he left behind.  Meanwhile, Aurelita thinks she’s pregnant.  The ensuing breakdown of family inspires Roberto to quit his job and contemplate a move to Miami.

The theatrical re-release of the Cuban-American classic is a re-mastered, digital print made through the original negatives.  Audiences everywhere laughed and cried when the comedic melodrama first debuted in 1979.  El Super is likely to captivate a new generation of fans, with its still-relevant themes.
