Miami, May 24, 2013 - Student pilots in the renowned Eig-Watson School of Aviation at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Homestead Campus are receiving a special gift: a new scholarship generously donated to the school by the family of pilot Timothy E. Johnson, Jr. His family will make the presentation in a special ceremony at 10 a.m., Friday, May 31, at Landmark Aviation, in Miami.

The $40,000 Timothy E. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship will help students interested in becoming commercial pilots who may not otherwise be able to afford the expense. The College’s pilot students not only pay tuition for their degree in the Professional Pilot Technology program, they also have the added costs to learn to fly, with limited outside resources.

Johnson was an avid aviation enthusiast. His generosity and kindness made him a dedicated pilot who devoted his free time to saving the lives of animals through the Pilots N Paws program. “Our family could not think of a better way to honor the life of our beloved son, brother and husband,” said his father, Timothy Johnson, Sr.

The scholarship comes at an important time when the industry is beginning to experience a shortage of pilots. Federal mandates taking effect next summer will require all newly-hired pilots to have at least 1,500 hours of prior flight experience - six times the current minimum - raising the cost and time to train new pilots in an era when pay cuts and more-demanding schedules already have made the profession less attractive. Meanwhile, thousands of senior pilots will soon start hitting the mandatory retirement age of 65.

The Eig-Watson School of Aviation at Miami Dade College’s Homestead Campus provides the greatest opportunities for students to achieve success by meeting the professional and educational needs of the aviation industry. MDC has offered the aviation program for 40 years.

“We are honored that the family wants to give, in memory of their son, to help aspiring pilots who share his life’s passion,” said Dr. Jeanne Jacobs, president of the Homestead Campus.
