Miami Dade College Baseball Head Coach Named 2013 Southern Conference Coach of the Year

Miami, June 3, 2013 - Miami Dade College (MDC) Baseball Head Coach Danny Price has been named the 2013 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. This year, he led the team to a 38 -10 overall record and a 19 - 5 conference record. Coach Price just concluded his third season with the MDC Sharks and has a record of 99 – 47 - 1 during his tenure at MDC.

“These types of awards are a reflection of the coaches and the players,” said Coach Price. “To me, there is no such thing as an individual award. I share this award with the people around me.”

The baseball team concluded their season at the FCSAA State Tournament. The Sharks placed two players on the 2013 FCSAA First Team All-State – Victor Caratini and Omar Garcia – and Jose Gomez, Steven Negron, Ivan Palez on the second team.

“We had a very good season and are happy for the players who have received these awards,” Coach Price said.  “Our goal is to keep players like this coming to our program, get better each season. Our season didn’t end how we would have liked because we didn’t accomplish our final goal, winning our last game, but we still had a great season.”

Over the past five decades, MDC has helped develop some of the country’s top baseball players, including Major Leaguers Placido Polanco, Raul Ibanez, Orlando Palmeiro, Kiko Calero, and Alex Sanchez. In addition, former Major League players Mike Piazza, Mickey Rivers, Bucky Dent, Alex Fernandez, Jaime Navarro, Oddibe McDowell, Warren Cromartie, Steve Carlton, Gil Patterson, and Kurt Bevacqua also played baseball at MDC. Moreover, many other MDC players have enjoyed great success in other professional leagues in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia while others have made strides in the coaching ranks of high schools, colleges and professional teams.
