MDC’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach Susan Summons to be Honored as a New England Basketball Hall of Fame Icon

Miami, June 14, 2013 - For her extraordinary career on and off the court, Miami Dade College (MDC) Head Women’s Basketball Coach Susan Summons will be honored as an “Icon” of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 22 at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. This is a year of great recognition for Summons, as she is also being inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in July.

It is an extraordinary honor to be recognized as an icon for my service and accomplishments,” said Summons. “To join NBA Greats like Michael Adams, Celtics’ K.C. Jones and others is tremendous. Coaching and teaching over the years has provided me the opportunity to reach a great number of students and athletes and help to shape and influence their success.”

In the 2013 season Summons finished with an overall record of 10-20, 6-9 conference. In addition to the team’s wins, MDC’s Lady Sharks women’s basketball program has maintained a graduation rate of 93 percent.

Summons has served as MDC’s Head Women’s Basketball coach for 27 years. Outside of coaching, she is known as a nurturing teacher, administrator and community advocate. She is an acclaimed motivational speaker and also the founder of the Best of the Rest Stars, Inc., which is a nonprofit organization that provides basketball training for boys and girls.

A Boston native, Summons was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 and into the Rhode Island International Scholar Hall of Fame in 2002.
