Miami Dade College to Celebrate Graduation of Year UP Miami’s Inaugural Class Aug. 8

Miami, August 6, 2013 - Year Up Miamiwill celebrate its trailblazing partnership with Miami Dade College (MDC) and the accomplishments of their inaugural class with a graduation ceremony at 8 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.

The graduating class represents pioneers of the Year Up program in Miami. They have worked hard and paved the way for other young adults in the community. MDC staff, mentors, families, and corporate partners will come together to celebrate their accomplishments. The Wolfson Campus launched Year Up in the fall of 2012, joining a number of colleges across the nation that share the program’s mission of closing the education and opportunity gap in urban communities. A cohort of about 20 or more students are selected for the program each fall and spring, and for an entire semester they were trained in business development and life skills, along with academic support. Those who elect to continue in the program are placed in full-time, six-month internships where they further their career readiness skills, while receiving college credits.

The ceremony will feature keynote speakers Barry Johnson, CEO of the Miami Greater Chamber, Year Up founder Gerald Chertavian, and David Frederick, Class 2013 Year Up graduate. The Year Up – MDC partnership has been lauded in the national media, including The New York Times, Forbes magazine and The Huffington Post
