Miami Dade College Student Honored as Superhero by Univision

Andrea Viejo

Andrea Viejo, Winner, Premios Juventud Super Hero Award

Miami, August 5, 2013 - Andrea Viejo is a heroine. People around her have been saying that for years. Recently, Univision confirmed it. The Spanish-language network awarded the Miami Dade College (MDC) student with its first annual Premios Juventud’s Super Héroe, Superhero Youth Award, for her countless effort to serve the community she calls home.

Despite being diagnosed with a brain tumor at 15 – and going through yearly follow-ups since then – this psychology major has been volunteering at Miami Children’s Hospital since middle school, and at the Ronald McDonald House for the past two-and-a-half years. She also finds time to serve as the president of the Kendall Campus’ Activity Board and is a member of its Psi Beta club.

"I love to help,” Viejo said. “I feel so honored with this prize. I hope to serve as a role model for the young people to help in our community,” she added.

When she’s not studying or volunteering, this Manhattan-born heroine enjoys dancing, hanging out with friends, and spending time with her family.
