Spain’s Former Minister of Defense to Serve as Professor in Residence at Miami Dade College during the 2013-14 Academic Year


Miami, August 29, 2013 - Carme Chacón Piqueras, Spain’s first female Minister of Defense from 2008-2011, will join Miami Dade College (MDC) as a Professor in Residence during the 2013-14 Academic Year.  Based at the Wolfson Campus, she will help lead a number of college-wide initiatives.

Her activities will include serving as a lecturer for MDC’s Office of International Education, The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives, and the Institute for Civic Engagement & Democracy, among other important duties and responsibilities. 

Born in 1971 in Catalonia, Spain, Chacón has served in many key governmental capacities including as Minister of Defense of Spain, Vice President of Spain’s Parliament, and Minister of Housing, among other high-level posts.

“I am absolutely honored and thrilled to spend the next academic year at an institution not only renowned in America but across the world, especially in Spain,” said Chacón. “I look forward to interacting with the faculty and students in many ways to foster more synergies, collaboration and understanding between Miami and Spain.” 

Chacón obtained a law degree from the University of Barcelona and has also completed extensive graduate coursework at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, the Université de Montréal, the University of Kingston in Ontario, and Laval University in Quebec. She also served as a lecturer and professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Girona in Spain.
