Miami Dade College North Campus Welcomes its Inaugural Class of the Year Up Professional Training Corps

Miami, September 11, 2013 - Miami Dade College (MDC) North Campus recently welcomed its inaugural class of Year Up’s Professional Training Corps (PTC). Year Up PTC provides students with professional development and work experience as they work toward their associate degrees. As part of the program, students have enrolled in regular college credit courses as well as enhanced Year Up courses at MDC’s North Campus. They later participate in a six-month, full-time, credit-bearing professional internship in information technology. Students will receive 24 to 30 credits for the year that will be applied toward an associate’s degree, which they can complete the following year.

MDC entered into a partnership with Year Up last year and has now expanded the program to its North Campus.

“We’re excited about offering our students the opportunity to learn new skills and hone expertise to make them competitive for today’s job market,” said Interim North Campus President Malou C. Harrison. “The program not only offers a perfect balance of education and training, but it responds to a critical need to develop a highly-skilled workforce.”

Boston-based Year Up believes millions of young adults in this country lack access to higher education and careers that provide them with a living wage despite talent and motivation. Year Up’s core model includes: contextualized learning, professional skills, connections with the local labor market, high expectations, social and emotional support and stipends that help students support themselves and their families while pursuing education.

“Our Year Up partnership with MDC is moving into high gear with a brand new cadre of highly motivated students at the institution’s first Campus,” said Mr. Harold Lockheimer, Year Up Miami’s executive director. “Our Professional Training Corps will incorporate the central tenets of academic and professional skills that employers require.”

The MDC – Year Up partnership has been lauded in the national media.
