Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus to Host a Conference on “Preventing Genocide” Sept. 26

Miami, September 11, 2013 - As part of Miami Dade College’s (MDC) acclaimed Holocaust and Genocide Education Program and the Peacebuilding Series, MDC’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives (CLACI) and the Department of Social Sciences of Wolfson will host a conference titled “Preventing Genocide” at 11:15 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. The conference is free and open to the public. Free parking in the building’s garage, Building 7, is available for attendees.

The open forum, conducted in both English and Spanish, will address the early detection signs and the likelihood of crimes occurring against humanity and what the international community can do to prevent them. MDC’s Executive Director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives Dr. Juan Antonio Blanco, will open the conference. Spain’s former Minister of Defense Ms. Carme Chacon, who is currently a professor in residence at MDC will make a special presentation. Additionally, a panel of MDC professors, Dr. Eric Belokon and Magdalena Lamarre, will address various angles of this topic. Dr. Victor Vazquez-Hernandez, chair of the Department of Social Sciences at the Wolfson Campus will moderate the session.

Supported by a grant from the United States Institute for Peace Support, “Preventing Genocide” is part of MDC’s continuous effort to provide a platform for thought-provoking discussion. The college has recently hosted various international events on current regional challenges, such as threats against human rights and freedom of the press in Latin America. It also organized a series of invited speakers to address the current situation in Cuba, including renowned dissidents such as blogger and independent journalist Yoani Sanchez, three members of the Ladies in White, Cuban priest Father Jose Conrado, Antonio Rodiles, Eliecer Avila, Manuel Cuesta Morúa, Leonardo Calvo, Juan Madrazo, Wendy Iriepa and Ignacio Estrada Cepero.
