Miami Dade College’s Lady Sharks Volleyball Team Clinches Southern Conference Champions Title

Miami, October 15, 2013 - Winning their last home game of the season last week, the Miami Dade College (MDC) Lady Sharks volleyball team are this year’s Southern Conference Champions. The team outpaced Indian River State College Pioneers 3-1.

The stand-out athletes of the winning match were sophomore Stephanie Hernandez with 22 digs, sophomore Haley Foote with 23 assists and freshman Carelis Rojas with 18 assists.  This was also a great game for sophomore Wendy Romero, who rocked the match with 24 kills and 11 digs.

Sophomores Giuliana Ballarin, Jovanna Santamaria, Haley Foote, Kayla Dowdell, Lakelia Cooper, Paola De Ayala, Stephanie Hernandez and Wendy Romero were highly recognized for their sportsmanship, which helped raise the team to a new level.

This past weekend, the Lady Sharks participated in Florida State College’s Volleyball Tournament of Champions in Jacksonville, where they defeated Illinois Central College, Polk State College, College of Central Florida and Florida State College of Jacksonville.

MDC’s Department of Athletics prides itself in the sponsorship of academic development and promotion of sports. MDC teams have earned a total of 33 NJCAA titles, including 13 in women’s sports. 

The intercollegiate athletic program at MDC works in partnership with its dynamic, multi-cultural community to provide accessible and high quality guidance and direction by keeping the needs of the student-athlete at the center of decision-making.
